The ongoing development of Shady Rest

Updated: Sep 11, 2020

Well I cannot believe that it is now June. For many of us living here in France, we would say it is still winter what with all the very odd weather we are having. The sun has finally arrived but it is mixed in with lots and lots of rain. Darren has been frantically trying to keep up with the lawns, however trying to tame 16 acres has been a big ask. Despite loving his new tractor I think even he would say 'that's enough'. A month has passed since my last blog and so much has happened.

We managed to host a party in our hanger barn for our 1st wedding anniversary which was a huge success. 40+ people managed to fit inside Shady Rest out of the hot sun (yes the sun made an appearance for the day). In fact it was such a huge success we have decided to make it an Annual event to show off all of the hard work Darren has put in year in year out.

Shady Rest is our social area for guests to use. It is home to our Pool table, dart board, art equipment, books, board games and relaxing furniture. To the rear is a fabulous garden with outstanding views and a great position to see the outstanding sun sets.

Here are a few photos to show you what Darren has managed to develop over the past year.

Thankfully the barn is now taking shape and we only have small plans to complete. This year will see many indoor plants and a small library of books added to Shady Rest to complete our vision for this year.

As you will all be aware we became an LPO Refuge at the start of this year so we are very motivated now to start development on the gardens. Our first mission was to start our Bug garden which will be home to our Toad houses, hedgehog homes, bug hotels and ant farm. We have selected an area in the garden which is already home to many toads but is also an area that always seems to get overgrown and is very hard to maintain. After a week of digging, weeding and clearing we seem to have the base for what is going to be a fantastic development of homes and unusual shrubs. Further details in my next blog.

Thank you for listening and following our adventures. We hope you approve of our developments and we hope to see you all again in a few weeks.

Thank you and à bientôt
